Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 15, 2026. This policy explains what data chess.video collects, how it is used, and your rights over that data.
What we collect
chess.video is designed to collect as little data as possible. Here is exactly what we store:
- Email address — only if you create an account. Accounts are optional; you can generate videos without signing in. We use your email solely to authenticate you via a one-time code.
- Video metadata — when a video is generated, we store the PGN notation you submitted, the rendering settings you chose (piece style, board theme, format, etc.), and the CDN URL of the resulting video file. This lets us show you your video history if you are signed in.
- IP address — collected transiently for rate limiting and abuse prevention. We do not log or store IP addresses beyond what is needed for in-flight request handling.
We do not collect your name, location, device identifiers, or any information beyond what is listed above.
How we use your data
- Your email is used to send you a sign-in code and to identify your account. We do not send marketing emails.
- Video metadata is used to display your generation history and to serve your videos from our CDN. It is not used for any other purpose.
- Aggregated, anonymous usage statistics (such as total videos rendered per day) may be used internally to monitor service health.
What we do not do
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for commercial purposes.
- We do not use tracking pixels, fingerprinting scripts, or behavioral ad networks.
- We do not display advertisements.
- We do not profile you or build inferred interest categories.
Third-party services
chess.video integrates with the following external services to deliver its core functionality:
- Lichess API — used to fetch game data when you search by Lichess username. Your username is sent to Lichess to retrieve your recent games. Lichess's own privacy policy applies to that request.
- Chess.com API — used similarly when you search by Chess.com username. Chess.com's privacy policy governs those requests.
- Cloudflare — our infrastructure runs on Cloudflare Workers and R2 object storage. Video files are stored on Cloudflare R2 and served via Cloudflare's CDN. Cloudflare may process request metadata (such as IP addresses) in accordance with their privacy policy. We also use Cloudflare Turnstile for bot protection; this does not set tracking cookies.
Data retention
Generated video files are stored on our CDN for 90 days from the date of creation. After that period they are automatically deleted. Video metadata records associated with your account are retained as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all associated metadata is removed within 30 days.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, or delete the data we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights — including requesting deletion of your account and all associated data — email us at hello@chess.video. We will respond within 30 days.
If you are located in the European Economic Area, you also have rights under the GDPR, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
